Mayor Michael Bloomberg has vowed to keep out of the presidential race, but he can’t seem to stay away from it _ he and Democratic candidate Barack Obama had a breakfast date in Manhattan.
The billionaire mayor and the Illinois senator chatted over eggs and potatoes early Friday at the New York luncheonette on East 50th Street, in what could be the first of several sit-down meetings Bloomberg may have with the declared candidates.
The mayor allows his aides to openly promote speculation that he will run for president, but continues to deny any interest in doing so. He has said he intends to inject himself into the national dialogue to try to influence the debate. Read more

The Hound is always on the lookout for a good breakfast spot, especially this time of year when I focus on holiday shopping and often get up at the crack of 10 to hunt for bargains. I need a hearty breakfast just to walk from the Houndmobile to the mall.
Recently I discovered Dixie Belles Caf�, which is not a Mexican restaurant named Iguana’s. It almost was. For the longest time there was a sign out front announcing the coming of the lizardian restaurant, but it never happened. I was told by a manager at Dixie Belles that one of the people involved in developing Iguana’s died, prompting the surviving partners to rethink the restaurant. They decided to focus on breakfast and lunch to fill the void that was left when the nearby Nellie Belle’s closed following an electrical fire a couple of years ago. The owner of that popular breakfast spot took the fire as a sign that 25 years in the business was enough and decided it was time to retire. Read more

1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats 2 cups water 2 cups pancake mix, complete — * 1/2 cup apple — * * shredded 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon In medium bowl, combine rolled oats and water; let stand 5 minutes. Meanwhile, heat large nonstick skillet or griddle tomedium high heat (375F). Grease lightly with oil. Add remaining ingredients to rolled oats mixture; stir just until all ingredients are moistened. (Batter will be thin). For each pancake, pour 1/4 cup batter into hot skillet. Cook 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, turning when edges look cookied and bubbles begin to break on surface. Continue to cook 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with syrup, if desired. 15 (4-inch) pancakes; 5 servings Note: use low-fat Bisquick if you prefer.

1 1/2 teaspoons butter or margarine 1 small apple, peeled, cored & cut into rings 6 teaspoons sugar, divided 1 egg — separated 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon all-purpose flour In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add apple rings; sprinkle with 2 teaspoons sugar. Cook until tender, turning once. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg yolk, lemon peel and vanilla for 1 minute. In another mixing bowl, beat egg white until stiff peaks form; fold in flour and remaining sugar. Fold into egg yolk mixture. Place apple rings in a greased 2-cup baking dish. Spread egg mixture on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes or

| 8 | oz | cream cheese, cut into cubes | |
| 1 | lg | granny smith apple, peeled, sliced | |
| 6 | each | eggs | |
| 1 | cup | milk | |
| 1 1/2 | tablespoon | cinnamon | |
| 1 | | powdered sugar | |
| 1 | | sliced almonds | |
| 1 | | syrup | |

Directions:

Place half of bread cubes in a greased 11×7 baking dish. Cover with all of the cream cheese cubes, distributing evenly. Sprinkle with apple slices. Top with remaining bread cubes and almonds. Beat together eggs, milk and cinnamon until well blended. Pour over bread mixture in dish. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Bake in pre-heated 375 degree oven about 35 minutes or until set. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with syrup.
